If I had to summarise our first family camping trip in one word… I would say it was… ‘wet’. Yes… ‘wet’ covers it quite nicely. Our first family camping trip was ‘wet’. Very, very, very ‘wet’.
We’d all seen the forecast, each of us admitting later that we’d thought better of it. But as a group we ploughed on, an unfortunate combination of deep denial and wild optimism.
The clouds looked angry as we crossed the river. I’m not sure what we did to offend them but as we pulled in to the camp-site they really let us have it.
The rain came hard, the rain came sideways. ‘Torrential’ doesn’t do it justice. The tents went up (only to be taken down, emptied of rain water and put back up again) while the children entertained themselves jumping up and down in muddy puddles.
It wasn’t the camping experience I’d imagined. But we vowed to make the best of it. It was still a break from home, time with friends and an adventure for the little ones.
We spent the evening huddling under a waterproof gazebo, six adults, four children and a sense of impending doom. We dined on sausages and baked beans, washed down with cold beer. We made jokes and laughed and the rain kept coming.
At 10pm we called it a night. It was a night. And a long one at that.
Our tents leaked, our bedding was damp. There is only so long you can make the best of before you have to admit that actually it’s a bit shit.
So when morning came we gave in, packed our things and left our brave friends behind. The girls slept all the way home in our damp car stirring now and then as I coughed and sneezed. The rain kept coming.
Later, when the girls were asleep in their beds, we drank wine on our dry sofa and felt pangs of survivor guilt for our friends back in the wet field with the big puddles and the kangaroo crap. But oh, was it good to be dry.

We ditched cabins when the rain kept pouring down, so well done sticking with the tents overnight!
ReplyDeleteThe last camping trip we went on was a bit like that. We haven't camped since.
ReplyDeleteFace it - wet weather camping basically sux. Doing it with small kids takes suckiness to another level.
We've been lucky enough to only encounter rain once when camping, on the day we were due to pack up and head home. I can only imagine how miserable you would have felt!
ReplyDeleteWe really did try and make the best of it, but next time we'll definitely postpone if the forecast looks bad!
DeleteOh you poor thing. So right about eventually it wearing you down and no longer being fun. At least you got out there and gave it a go!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like being snug and dry!! Though I have had a few wet camping trips, though I was a lot younger back then, had no kids and a lot more tolerant of the elements! Nowadays I am just too old and grumpy and would much prefer some sort of 5 start accommodation!! :0) LOL
ReplyDeleteCatherine, think of how yuck it was, then multiply it by 100 for the amount of exciting memories you've made for your girls! I've done the camping in torrential rain thing, and it's not pleasant, but always something to talk about in the future, even if it is just to say "how crazy were we??!!".
ReplyDeleteSo true, G is already asking to go camping again, she had a ball!
DeleteI would have gone home too. Nothing worse than being cold and wet.
ReplyDeleteMy first experience of camping was rained out - it took over a week to dry out the sleeping bag. I think this may be why I absolutely and unconditionally abhor camping. It is the pits, just hideous.
ReplyDeleteMy son will have to go with his father on their own I'm afraid. They can go have their disgusting idea of fun. Get rained out and jump in puddles, just as long as I don't have to be involved in the madness.

I don't think I would have even gone and I definitely wouldn't have lasted a night !!!
ReplyDeleteGood on you !
Have the best week !

Oh look, you lived in the Uk a lot, I'm sure you've done your bit for camping in the rain!!
ReplyDeleteoh lord - camping is lovely in fine conditions but man it's uncomfortable in wet! you poor little drowned rats - nothing worse than a leaky tent - think I would have high tailed it outta there too!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw you say last week that you were going camping, my first thought was, "Bad idea!". When I was out in the city walking around, the only one with an umbrella in my group so only half soaked, you popped in to my head and I thought "At least I'm not camping, the poor things." You should definitely try to go again because camping when the weather is decent is so much fun, but camping in the rain is the absolute pits, no matter what anyone says!
ReplyDeleteForgot to add #teamIBOT was here!
DeleteWe'll defiantly be doing it again! But I reserve the right to cancel if it looks like rain! :-)
DeleteIt's a shame when holidays don't go as planned, but at least you have an adventure story to share. I best the sausages and beans were the tastiest sausages and beans you've ever eaten too :)
ReplyDeleteThey sure were!
DeleteYou get a bravery award as far as Im concerned. I have not camped since I was a kid.... though with 3 boys I am guessing that is going to have to change sooner or later. x
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your daughter in purple raincoat - it's like she's say 'what's up y'all? Sorry it was raining and that you all got wet - BOO. But what a great experience?! Em xx
ReplyDeleteWe don't go camping in bad weather for all the reasons you described - its just not fun! And if your camping gear is wet when you put it away, you have to put it up again when you get home, to dry it, so that is another painful downside. (Note to Catherine: Hope you have put the tent etc. up to dry!!).
ReplyDeleteI truly hope that you do get out there again and have a great time when you do. Our kids adore it and are making some amazing memories with their experiences outdoors.
And of course, if you need any advice, happy to help!!!
Regards, Annie
I would have done the same, but much earlier. I hate being wet and cold. Don't feel bad for your friends, they could have (and probably did!) left soon after ;)
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness! I can't do camping in perfect weather - let alone the wet! I thought you were going to say at 10pm we packed up and found a hotel! Good work for sticking it out as long as you did xx
ReplyDeleteLOL yes we had a camping holiday like that when our kids were little. I woke up during the night to find my hand (which was over the edge of my mattress) was in a rapidly growing puddle of water! AND it was a foam mattress which meant it was all soggy in no time! Luckily the kids' room of the tent was dryer than our. I spent the rest of the night trying to sleep in the back of our station wagon - at daylight we packed up and went home.
ReplyDeleteOh no love, that sucks! At least you stuck it out for the whole night though, I take my hat off to you for that. I remember a rainy camping trip when I was a kid, covered in mud. We were in a caravan, the rest of the family in a tent, so we had it a little easier though ;) xx
ReplyDeleteI'm not a very good camper. Takes me a couple of days to settle but after that I'm ready to go home! Esp hate wet camping! You did the right thing xx
ReplyDeleteWe're campers at heart.
ReplyDeleteBut there's nothing that can start an argument better than a wet, dreary camping trip.
Bet that sofa felt like heaven!
Camping in the rain is the pits. We have only ben camping once with children, and it was fun, but I wasn't rushing back for more. I like comfy beds :) Love that photo of G peeking out from behind the tent. x
ReplyDeleteOh how disappointing for you! You made the right decision though! I cannot see how camping in the wet could be enjoyable...especially with children! I am not a good camper at the best of times. How did the others fair that braved it out? Min xo
ReplyDeleteBummer! At least the next camping trip will probably be a winner in comparison. we are off in the next couple of weeks for an adventure of our own. Hopefully the rain is somewhere else!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear your camping trip did not turned out as planned. Would have thought the kids would have enjoyed playing in the rain? Fingers crossed for better weather for your next camping adventure - if you are going again that is!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was thinking about you last weekend and wondering how you were getting through the rain! And then I saw the gorgeous IG photos of C and G and I thought, "Bless! So typical of Catherine to make the most of a wet experience" Well done for surviving! Hope you didn't catch a cold!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, this reminds me of all the Easter camping holidays we went on when I was growing up. It was always pissing down. Very soggy!
