Window kissing

We’ve developed a rather odd goodbye ritual in our house. I don’t remember when it started or why. I suspect we did it once as a distraction tactic or perhaps I was just being silly. But sometimes, when you have small children, once is all it takes… what was a moment of silliness is now a tradition that is repeated every single day.

We get up and have breakfast. We all drink tea. Sometimes we forget to make tea for the girls but they soon remind us. It surprises me that they love tea so much, I guess you could say they are their mother's daughters.

After breakfast my husband tries to sneak off for a shower. I say sneak off because if either of us say the word “shower” out loud little C immediately starts stripping off and heading upstairs. She loves the shower.

When it’s time for him to leave we all go downstairs to wave him off. But he doesn’t get kisses until he is outside… he gets his goodbye kisses through the window…

We all presses our pursed lips against the glass and my husband kisses us one by one…

He tries to make a break for it…

And… G calls him back: “More kisses Daddy!”

And we repeat the entire ritual.

I don’t know how it started, but now it is as much apart of our family traditions as a cup of tea with breakfast or a curry on a Friday night. We are a window kissing family now.

Have you got any odd family rituals or traditions? Did any of them start by accident?

  1. That's gorgeous! We have window kissing too ... but it's from the dog not the humans. I've given up washing the windows on the French doors ...

  2. Love that :) We do kisses through the shower window. It looks a bit like that. I love that you have a goodbye ritual. Zanni xx

  3. That is a cute tradition Catherine - love the photo! We don't have anything like that, unfortunately, although Delilah does like heading out the door to wave daddy off some mornings. Mind you, she sometimes waves so hard that I think her arm might drop off!

  4. Gorgeous. We do 'highs' and 'lows'. We don't often get to sit down to dinner together because my husband works late but when we do we go around the table and we each have to say the high and low point of our day. The kids love it (but usually their low point is the brocolli on their plate).

  5. Gorgeous tradition! no window kisses here - but there is always a kiss and an I Love You to everyone before we leave in the morning - hope we can keep it up even when the boys are teenagers!

    1. Yes, I'm not sure how long the window kissing will last, I can't see them doing it when they are teens! xx

  6. Love it! My son has got a really odd tradition that happens whenever Mr Nomad gets home from work, he farts. He thinks it's the funniest thing in the world no matter how many times I tell him it's not polite.
    Prue xx

  7. Lol, that's so cute! We don't have anything quite like that, although knowing the way my husband is I can see it definitely happening in the future.

  10. That's so very cute. I remember my first tea, I would have been lucky to be 5 years old at my nannas house. And still to this day I love tea. I'm not a regular coffee drinker but I never start the day without a cup of tea.

  11. We have the sign language "I love you/SQUISH!" ritual every night... with each of the boys. It started with my eldest and continued until he was 10... Miss 11 is over it now but the youngest two love it still!
    So CUTE! x

  12. We're fence kissers Catherine. Same idea - the girls farewell their Daddy with kisses - just through the stainless steel wire on the deck instead of a pane of glass.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment today.
    Cheers,

  14. What a cutie ritual, we are a very smoochie family also. Our ritual is that we always kiss everyone in our family before they leave the house. My kids adore when their dad comes home, we have a ritual that when he arrives home we are always waiting on the driveway for him (it's also that I can't WAIT to have him home to help me)! Emily

  17. Tee hee hee! That's just too adorable!
Kids love their rituals, don't they? The boys both give us big hugs and kisses when they go to bed. Then we do it all again. When I finally walk out their bedroom door, they yell out "Night night, Mama! Wuv you!" Melt. My. Heart...

  18. we have an entire ritual at night time now that includes ALL "good night sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite. see you in the morning - hoot hoot! happy new year! love you!" and you can't miss one or you have to do it all over again.
